He is a former IBF junior welterweight champion and a world title challenger at welterweight. His nickname of "Iron Twin" is a reference to his twin brother, Pedro Urango, who is also a former boxer.

Urango's current record is 22-3-1 (17 KOs) and he is a former IBF world light welterweight champion. On June 30, 2006, he defeated Australian boxer Naoufel Ben Rabah by a controversial points win. Urango lost the title in his first defence to English boxer Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas on January 20, 2007 via a 12 round unanimous decision.

He then moved up in weight to try it on with WBC Welter champ Andre Berto, but Bertos movement and speed was too much for the slower Urango, He lost a decisive UD.
In August 2009 He defended his IBF light welterweight title by an 11th round TKO against former WBO light welter champ Randall Bailey.
Devon Alexander defeated Juan Urango by TKO in Round 8 in early 2010.
